Britain plans to double the price of plastic bags

To reduce the use of plastic bags, the British government announced on August 30 that it would at least double the price of plastic bags to at least 10p, up from the current 5p, and that the policy would cover all businesses in the country.
The British government said in a statement on the same day that the plastic bag charging policy has led to a 86 percent reduction in the consumption of plastic bags in major British supermarkets. To further reduce the use of plastic bags, the government plans to require all retailers in the UK, regardless of their size, to impose a charging policy for plastic bags, which will be raised from 5p now to at least 10p. The consultation will start later this year.
Britain officially introduced a plastic bag fee policy in 2015, but the rule only applies to large supermarkets with more than 250 employees, while small retailers voluntarily implement it. Gove, the environment, food and rural affairs minister, said the UK's plastic bag charging policy had been a "huge success" with public support, with 13 billion fewer bags in circulation in the past two years alone.
Plastic bag fees are part of the UK government's efforts to curb pollution from plastic waste. The move comes after the UK government unveiled a series of measures aimed at reducing the production of plastic waste, including exploring the creation of plastic-free packaging aisles in supermarkets.
