France will ban disposable plastic bags from 2016

The French government announced Thursday that it will ban the use of disposable plastic bags from 2016, replacing them with biodegradable bags and compostable bags. The timetable is well ahead of a deadline set by the eu.
In considering a bill on biodiversity, the council for sustainable development of the French national assembly held a night meeting and passed an amendment proposed by the government to ban disposable plastic bags from January 1, 2016, China news service reported. French environment minister segolene royal welcomed the decision, saying it would create new jobs in the industry.
Compared with the policies of the European Union, the bill proposed by the French government is more advanced. The European parliament passed a directive in April to cut the use of single-use plastic bags in the eu by half by 2017 and by 80 per cent by 2019.
The bill aims to replace single-use plastic bags with biodegradable bags and compostable bags because they cause serious pollution to the environment, especially the Marine environment, royal told the press on the same day. But supermarkets and stores can still offer reusable shopping bags, which are not affected, she added.
Royal believes it is an important move that environmental groups have been waiting for. It will also boost green industries such as biodegradable packaging materials, creating more jobs in France.
