The ban on plastic bags in the Philippines is causing environmental problems

According to the business mirror of the Philippines on March 9, the ban on plastic bags has increased the demand for paper bags and caused a series of environmental problems, including deforestation and more water and electricity consumption to make paper bags. It reportedly takes 17 trees to make a ton of paper and a gallon of water to make a supermarket paper bag. One gallon of water can make 116 plastic bags without logging. Therefore, using paper bags is no more environmentally friendly than plastic bags. The report called for a balanced use of plastic and paper bags, and for regulating the way people dispose of rubbish.
