Singapore's green initiatives! Supermarkets send barcode shopping bags to reduce plastic bags

Singapore shoppers take 820 million plastic bags from supermarkets every year. Four major supermarket chains in Singapore are giving away bar-coded eco-friendly shopping bags for seven weeks from tomorrow in a bid to encourage less plastic bags.

Four supermarket chains, including the Singapore federation of workers' co-op and sheng sung supermarket, have teamed up with the Singapore environment council to promote a campaign to reduce plastic bags in supermarkets by at least a quarter.

The campaign will run from February 15 to February 3 next year. Anyone who reaches a certain amount of shopping in designated supermarkets will be given a bar-coded eco-friendly shopping bag to track consumer habits. Shopping bag is made of waterproof fiber.

The Singapore environment council, a non-profit ngo, calculated this year that the average Singaporean consumer USES three plastic bags every time he or she visits a supermarket.

Getting consumers to change their habits is not a simple task. Legislation and the collection of plastic bag fees are not necessarily the most effective ways. For example, through education and lobbying to reduce the use of plastic bags, consumers can make changes from the heart and the effect will be more lasting.

Fast food chain KFC will not offer plastic cup LIDS and straws to customers at its 84 branches in Singapore from June 20, in response to a straws free program. Some university restaurants also do not provide plastic straws. In Singapore, plastic was the top waste material in 2017, accounting for 760,000 3,400 tons, with only 6% recycling rate. In Singapore, only about 15% of consumers bring their own shopping bags.

Plastic waste recycling is still a big challenge in Singapore. According to the environment council survey, 70% of singaporeans do not know which plastic waste is suitable for recycling.
